A 50km stretch of coastline with the most amazing views of picturesque, pastel-coloured villages, small beaches and sheer cliffs overlooking the beautiful, blue ocean – that is the Amalfi coast.

Gem of the Amalfi Coast

If you ever get the chance to visit, you have to spend at least a day in Positano. As my friend and I were staying in Naples, we took the train to Sorrento and a local bus to Positano. Once we arrived, we bought last-minute picnic supplies from a local grocery store, wandered down the winding, narrow paths through the bustling market where locals sold an array of souvenirs, until we reached the beachfront and had lunch with a dreamy view and ocean breeze. The views were incredible wherever we looked and it was so fun to just explore without a set agenda (#traveltipwania – sometimes the best trips are ones without strict itineraries!).

Of course, I like to have an idea of must-see places I want to visit and if time is limited, then sometimes a strict itinerary just makes more sense. But I really enjoy the feeling of ‘slow travel’ and being able to leisurely explore your surroundings without feeling the pressure of checking off multiple things on your list in a short amount of time. Isn’t it such a beautiful feeling being able to relax, recharge and explore at your own pace? Not to mention be flexible enough to change plans and spend more time in a certain place that you feel drawn to? This was exactly what we did in Positano.

Tips for Picturesque Positano

Based on my day in Positano, here are a few recommendations for your trip:

1. I would recommend getting there very early in the day if you’re not staying in Positano itself. You can use public transport such as  the train to Sorrento and take a bus directly from the station to Positano.

2. The roads are quite winding so it’s not ideal if you easily get car sick or nauseous, try not to travel on a full stomach.

3. Have pizza or a picnic by the beach (we did both!) – talk about dinner with a view!

4. Wander around to find hidden alleys, cute shops and stunning viewpoints – my favourite thing to do in Positano since it is so picturesque. Snap some photos but don’t forget to just take a moment and admire the beauty of your surroundings instead of rushing to the next beautiful spot.

5. Visit some of my favourite viewpoints in Positano – Spiaggia Grande (beach), view from the water to soak in panoramic Positano, stairs near the bus stop and basically any staircase that has the picturesque hills and gorgeous architecture as the background.

PSA – the narrow, cliffside roads can be a bit scary at times if you’re driving yourself but it was nothing compared to the experience I had a few years ago on a road trip in the north of Pakistan (that’s a story for another time).

It truly was the best early birthday trip with my fellow May bby bestie from Canada and I can’t wait to go back one day and do a proper road trip to explore all the other gorgeous towns along the Amalfi Coast. Let me know in the comments if you’ve ever been and if you’d like to see a more detailed breakdown of my week in Italy. Drop any other questions you may have and I look forward to sharing more with you soon! ✨

I hope you found this useful and if you enjoyed reading this blog post, make sure to share it with friends and anyone who might be considering travelling to Italy soon!

  1. Having read this I thought it was extremely informative. I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put this informative article together. I once again find myself personally spending way too much time both reading and commenting. But so what, it was still worthwhile!

  2. Positano looks dreamyyy!! 🧡✨ Thanks for all the tips, will come in handy when I go visit this summer ✨✨

  3. Howdy! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from
an established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog?
I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast.
I’m thinking about making my own but I’m not sure where to
start. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
    Thanks

    1. Hey! It depends on what platform you decide to go for but I’d suggest doing plenty of research into all the options you have and then going from there. It is time-consuming and you have to be really committed to getting started but then also sticking to it so reflect on what you want the purpose of the blog to be and how dedicated you are. It isn’t easy but it’s also not impossible! There are so many great resources online, especially on YouTube that will help you learn a lot and it is definitely worth it in the end. Hope that helps!
